Financial Aid Timeline
||You and your parents receive prior year’s W2 forms and end-of-the-year benefit statements and complete your federal tax returns (if necessary.) Using federal tax return and end-of-the-year benefit statement information, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or update your Renewal Application. You may submit your Financial Aid information via the internet at FAFSA. Check with the NMSU Scholarship office for early deadlines. Branch campus students should check with their respective branch offices for details.
||You receive your Student Aid Report (SAR) in the mail from the Department of Education’s processing center. NMSU accesses your data electronically and sends letters or emails requesting additional documentation, such as copies of federal tax returns, end-of-the-year benefit statements, etc. March 1st is the priority deadline to file for aid and have funds ready for fall disbursement.
||Academic progress is reviewed. You can access your NMSU electronic award letter to accept or decline your awards be selecting Financial Aid at myNMSU. You must complete these processes before your award can be finalized. NOTE: First-time Stafford student loan borrowers (at NMSU) must attend an Entrance/Debt Management Counseling Session and sign a master promissory note (MPN) before their loans can be processed.
||If you apply for loans , promissory note paperwork is processed during this time.
||During the first days of the fall semester, aid is disbursed. All first-time borrowers must attend one Debt Management Counseling Session.
||Academic progress is reviewed.
||Spring aid is disbursed. Begin applying for the following year’s financial aid.
